Hello Fellow Choral Educator!

WCDA is excited to redesign Singing In Wisconsin’s format this year and would like to encourage you to bring students! Here are some quick things to consider:

  • You get to nominate whomever you feel should get to go. Whether it’s your best singer, or best attitude: you decide.

  • If you teach multiple levels (like MS and HS) you get to bring all your students to the same festival on the same day.

  • Your students get to learn some new things from great directors, and get inspired to do great things with choral music.

  • Parents get to come see and listen to the concert for a small $5 fee.

  • 100 kids singing in 4 different choirs: pretty awesome.

Here’s what the new format for Singing In WI looks like:

  • Youth Choir: Grades 5-6 boys and girls
  • Young Men’s Choir: Grades 7-8-9
  • Young Women’s Choir: Grades 7-8-9
  • SATB Choir: Grades 10-11-12

In creating this model we are keeping the best interests of the students in mind. We understand that 12th grade boys don’t like singing with 7th grade boys and we hope this model takes care of that issue. I know as soon as I said SIW was doing a mixed HS choir my students were instantly excited: put boys and girls together…

However, please note that if you are uncomfortable putting your 7th grade unchanged voice in the men’s ensemble you have the ultimate say and are allowed to keep him in the youth choir. Or if your 10th grade girl is awesome, you can ask to move her up a level.

SIW is $40 per accepted student: which gets them a day of instruction with a great director, a t-shirt, lunch, and they get to keep their music. Some of my high school graduates have been able to display 7 years of music at their graduations. Which I think is pretty neat.

I want to encourage you to consider joining WCDA and bring students to Singing In WI. It’s a great place for students to foster their love of choral singing, or even realize they may like choral singing, while we directors also have a great place to connect as colleagues!

Sincerely,
Sara Route
