One of the Purposes of the American Choral Directors Association is “to foster and encourage rehearsal procedures conducive to attaining the highest possible level of musicianship and artistic performance.”  The Wisconsin Choral Directors Association supports this important work with our annual conducting competition.  Undergraduate students currently enrolled in a Wisconsin college or university are eligible to participate in this event, held on the Thursday evening of the January conference.  Eight students each rehearse a high school choir for 15 minutes; then, a panel of three university conductors provide feedback for each student.  The winning conductor has the opportunity to rehearse with one of the all-state choirs on Friday or Saturday.

Details for the 2022 conducting competition will be announced in Fall 2021.

The Wisconsin Choral Directors Association is pleased to announce its 2022 Student Conducting Competition for undergraduate students.

The WCDA Student Conducting Competition is part of the annual WCDA Conference and All-State Choir event, which will be held in Milwaukee on January 13-15. It focuses on conducting gestures and communication skills within the rehearsal setting. Each competitor will conduct two selections in a 15-minute rehearsal with the choir from the Milwaukee HS of the Arts, (Raymond Roberts, director).

Competitors will be judged based on:
  • Clear communication of ideas, both through gestures and verbal instructions;
  • Accuracy of instruction;
  • Efficient rehearsal strategies;
  • Preparedness of the repertoire.

Undergraduate collegiate choral conductors are encouraged to take advantage of this excellent opportunity. Winners from past WCDA Conducting Competitions have secured excellent choral directing and teaching positions around Wisconsin post-graduation.

Opportunities:
  • Each competitor will receive a written critique from the judges, as well as a Certificate of Participation.
  • All competitors will have the opportunity to conduct conference attendees as they sight-read one piece at an "all-conference sing." Competitors will receive the piece to be conducted no later than January 5th.
  • The winner of the competition will receive a masterclass during All-State Collegiate rehearsal from WCDA 2022 All-State Collegiate Conductor Gary R. Schwartzhoff. To prepare for the masterclass, the applicants will choose and prepare - in advance - a piece from the all-state collegiate repertoire. The winner will appear in a 15-minutes masterclass with the collegiate choir conductor on January 14th.
The winner will be recognized at the WCDA Banquet, January 15th.
